Overview | BUILD YOUR SITE | Preparing images | Advanced functions

Step 2

Once you have saved your Web page on your hard drive in a text file format, you should check the page in your browser to make sure it looks as you want it.

Many Web page creation programs have a "Preview" function that loads your page into your Web browser for you. Use this function if you have it. Otherwise, follow these instructions:

  1. Start Netscape Communicator (or Internet Explorer).
  2. Click the File menu, then click Open Page.
  3. Click Choose File....

    Open Page dialog box

  4. In the Open dialog box, select the file you've just saved then click Open.
  5. Click Open in the Open Page dialog box.

    Open Page dialog box

  6. Your page will display itself in your browser window. Make sure you're satisfied with the way it looks.
  7. If you want to make any corrections, return to your Web page creation software to do so, then return to your browser software and click Reload (or Refresh)..
  8. Make sure your images load and that your links work. Remember that most Internet users will be viewing Web pages using Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer (probably versions 3 or 4) with a 640 x 480 screen size and with 256 colours. It's a good idea to check your pages with other browsers to make sure they look ok.

IMPORTANT:
One of your Web pages must be named "index.html" or "index.htm" (for Windows 3 users) using lowercase letters. If you have several Web pages, make sure you name the page you want to appear first "start.html".
