What is the Web? [ Learn About... ]

The Web consists of many millions of Web pages stored on many thousands of computers throughout the world. A Web page is a single computer file, written in HTML, which may contain many multimedia elements, such as text, images, sound and motion graphics, and which can be linked to other Web pages. This linking aspect of the Web is what gives it its name, since a graphic representation of links between files throughout the entire world looks like a Web. In order to view Web pages, you need a Web browser.

What is a Web site?

A Web site is a collection of Web pages produced by an organization or by a single person. Web sites usually have a main page called a home page that has links to all the major sections of the site.

What is a home page?

A home page is a "first page", or a "base". Every Web site, including the Business Internet Web site, has a home page. In this case, a home page is like the front door of a house since it provides access to the site.

Any Web page can be a home page. Web browsers such as Netscape Communicator allow you to specify which Web page you would like to use as your home page, which means that you will see it every time you start browsing. You can even make your own home page.

With Netscape Communicator, you can return to your home page at any time by clicking the Home button on the toolbar.
