Business Internet ADSL
(Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line)

BCE Emergis is proud to add ADSL to it's portfolio of access solutions.  ADSL enables customers to scale their Internet needs up the value chain of access products with greater speeds, pricing flexibility and service options.

What is ADSL?

ADSL is one of the newest local access technologies in the industry. In simple terms, it utilizes the unused capacity of a regular copper telephone line to provide unprecedented amounts of bandwidth to the user. Some of its features include:

  • Dedicated connection to the Internet (no bandwidth sharing or security vulnerability)
  • Connection is "Always On" (no dialing)
  • Simultaneous use of telephone and Internet on the same copper telephone line
  • Asymmetrical function is conducive to Internet use. (Greater speed downstream, from the Internet to users, than upstream, from users to the Internet.)
  • Maximum bandwidth speeds currently being offered by the BCE Emergis business class service is 2.2 MBPS downstream and 700 KBPS upstream.

What are some of the advantages of ADSL?

  • An independent local loop (separate phone line) is not required as ADSL uses an existing phone line and allows it to be used normally while you are accessing the Internet.
  • Your local connection with the Internet backbone is not shared as it is with cable modem infrastructures. This provides better security and dedicated bandwidth, or speed, to each user. Cable modem users are sharing their access bandwidth.
  • The higher downstream speed allows the users to take advantage of the bandwidth intensive multimedia technologies currently common on the Internet.

Are there any limitations?

Certain facility limitations, such as the distance from the Bell Canada Central Office, exist with ADSL technology. A facility check will be performed on the telephone line when Business Internet ADSL is ordered.

What is the current status of the offering?

BCE Emergis has now added ADSL to it's vast selection of Business Internet access technologies.  The service is available in most business communities in Ontario and Quebec.

For residential users, Sympatico continues to offer it's members a consumer class of ADSL service with it's "High Speed Edition" offering.

Pricing

Business Internet ADSL customers can select between two pricing options:

  • Usage Based - $499.00 per month, which includes 50Gb of total data transfer per month.  Additional 15Gb blocks of data transfer (or part thereof) is an additional $250.00.  There is a maximum monthly billing cap of $3000.00 for this option.
  • Flat Rate - $1899.00 per month, which includes unlimited data transfer.

Installation cost for either service is $250.00.

Please ask your Business Internet sales representative for more details.

Which pricing model is most suitable?

The decision on which pricing option a customer should select should be based on the amount of data throughput the customer is expecting to use.

The usage-based model, with 50GB included, is greater than the equivalent of using a 128Kbps ISDN service 7 days a week and for 24Hrs a day. Therefore, a customer who finds a 128Kbps line sufficient, should not expect to regularly exceed the 50GB cap on ADSL.

Where is it available?

Business Internet ADSL is available in most business communities in Ontario and Quebec.

Your Business Internet sales representative will be able to inform you of the availability of ADSL in your business community.
