FAQ #7:
I have an office at one end of my living room in my apartment. Is it appropriate to see clients or potential customers here? Or should I make other arrangements?

It depends on your relationship with the clients, your comfort in seeing them at your home office, and the nature of your business.

Because so many people are home business folks now, it is becoming more accepted in business arenas for people to work from home. However, it's a good idea to always meet potential corporate clients in their offices. It seems more professional and first impressions are important. Sometimes, it is appropriate to meet in a restaurant, if it's a casual meeting or networking activity.

Once you've established the relationship and you need to meet privately for ongoing coaching or planning, you may feel OK about inviting clients to your home office. Explain the environment and give them a choice. If you feel any fears or doubts, go with your instincts and set up a meeting in a neutral business office, even if it means borrowing a meeting room from a friend or renting one from a business centre. Location and parking availability may be a positive or negative factor. If you are conveniently located, the client may appreciate the opportunity to see you in your home office. Ensure that there will be no interruptions, set a business tone as you greet the person, and take it from there. So much depends on the relationship, trust, and comfort you establish with your clients. Where to meet will become a less important consideration as you carry on your business with that person.
