Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) is an emerging standard for secure electronic
commerce, developed and approved by a group of companies including
VISA, Mastercard ,
American Express,
Netscape and Microsoft.
SET uses encryption technology
similar to the Secure Sockets
Layer (SSL), but also includes the use of digital
certificates. What is more, when you buy online using SET, the merchant you are
dealing with never sees your credit card number. Instead, an encrypted code
connected to your credit card number is sent to your credit card issuer, which
approves the transaction for the merchant.
SET is still in the pilot stage, but expect to see it coming online for general
use in Internet commerce at the end of 1997.
